Most people call their insurer first and their roofer second, and it is usually the wrong way round. Here is how the process actually runs.

Get the roof looked at
Damage that matters is rarely visible from the ground. An inspection tells you whether you have a claim worth opening at all, which is worth knowing before you make the call.

Get it documented
Photographs, measurements and a written report of what was found and where. This is the record the rest of the process is built on, and it is yours to keep whoever you end up hiring.

File with your insurer
You open the claim; your insurer assigns an adjuster and sets a date. Deadlines vary by policy and by state, so check yours early rather than late.

Meet the adjuster on the roof
The adjuster inspects and writes their own scope. Having your roofer there means both are looking at the same damage, rather than trading emails about it afterwards.

Before You Call Anyone
The things people ask most after a storm, and the ones worth asking before you sign anything.
- How do I book the free roof inspection?
- Use the form on this page. Tell us the roof type if you know it, whether there is any water coming in, and whether you have already opened an insurance claim. We will come back to confirm a time.
- How do I know whether I have storm damage?
- Often you cannot see it from the ground, which is the whole problem. Hail bruising shows as dark pockmarks where the granules have been knocked off, and wind damage shows as lifted or creased tabs. Granules collecting in the gutters is worth a look. If a storm went through, get it checked before the claim window closes.
- What should I have ready when you come out?
- Roughly when you think the damage happened, photos of anything you have noticed inside the house, and your claim number if you have already opened one. If you have paperwork from a previous roof, that helps too.
